Requirements



M.A. Program
Students must complete a minimum of 24 course credits and 6 dissertation research credits (by taking Graduate Dissertation Research).
Students must receive a GPA of 3.0 or higher for their coursework.
Literature majors are required to take Bibliography and Research Methodology within 2 semesters of matriculation.
Literature majors must take at least one class in each of the 3 fields of: British literature before 1800, British literature since 1800, and American literature. Proseminars and primary courses satisfy these requirements, while secondary courses do not.
Students must pass the dissertation qualification exam (consisting of a field exam and a foreign language exam).
Students must complete the dissertation within 4 years of fulfilling coursework requirements.


Ph.D. Program
Students must take a minimum of 36 course credits (60 credits for the M.A. and Ph.D. programs combined) and 12 dissertation research credits (by taking Graduate Dissertation Research – 18 credits for the M.A. and Ph.D. programs combined).
Students must receive a GPA of 3.0 or higher for their coursework.
Literature majors must take at least one class in each of the 3 fields of: British literature before 1800, British literature since 1800, and American literature.
Students must pass the dissertation qualification exam (consisting of a general exam, a field exam and a foreign language exam).
Students must complete the dissertation within 6 years of fulfilling coursework requirements.
