Qualification Examination



Requirements

Students who have been registered for 2 or more semesters and obtained 12 or more credits may take the M.A. field exam or the Ph.D. general exam. Ph.D. students who have passed the general exam may take the Ph.D. field exam as early as the first semester after they have passed the general exam.


Test Dates

The M.A. field exam and the Ph.D. general exam take place every Saturday before the start of each semester. All foreign language exams are held simultaneously at the given date set by the College of Humanities. Dates for Ph.D. field exams are decided upon by each student’s Dissertation Committee according to the rules elaborated below.


 M.A. Field Exam
The exam is based on the reading list set out by the Graduate School Committee.60% or higher qualifies as a passing grade. Linguistics majors are required to take History of the English Language, and must choose 4 out of the following 5 subjects: English morphology, English phonology, English syntax, English semantics, and English education; taking a total of 5 exams. If the student fails in one subject, that one exam must be retaken. If the student fails in two or more subjects, all 5 exams must be retaken.


Ph.D. General Exam
Students must past the exam before completing the program.The exam is based on the reading list set out by the Graduate School Committee.70% or higher qualifies as a passing grade. Linguistics majors are required to take Old & Middle English or Modern English, and must choose 3 out of the following 5 subjects: English morphology, English phonology, English syntax, English semantics, and English education; taking a total of 4 exams. If the student fails in one subject, that one exam must be retaken. If the student fails in two or more subjects, all 4 exams must be retaken.

Ph.D. Field Exam
Students who have passed the general exam should hand in a dissertation proposal 5~10 A4 pages in length and form a dissertation committee after consulting with their advisor. The dissertation committee should consist of the student’s advisor and two other members from the university.70% or higher qualifies as a passing grade.
The literature field exam will consist of an oral exam put together by the student’s dissertation committee, based on the student’s dissertation proposal.The linguistics field exam will consist of a written exam put together by the student’s dissertation committee, based on the student’s dissertation proposal.
